the huayruro

These beautiful red seeds are from the Huayruro tree, found in the Peruvian rainforest. While in Peru last year I fell in love with their red orange color and the handcrafted jewelry local artisans used them for. I was told that these seeds were a symbol of good luck and brought fortune by keeping evil at bay. Many Peruvians would keep one on their person, such as a wallet. And I am sure all have been given one at some point or another. Above are a few jewelry pieces I made while there with and assortment of the large, medium and small sized huayruro seeds, jabon (or jaboncillo) seeds, and wooden beads.
